Celebrating Beltane &

Tregovenek’s community garden!

Beltane is the start of Summer. A time to enjoy the Earth being cloaked once again in green. All life is bursting with fertility, sap is rising, flowers are blooming, birdsong fills the air and growth is everywhere. The garden at Tregovenek is no exception!

☀️ The sun shone on Tregovenek’s garden opening day! ☀️

We finally got there!! It was a massive push for our incredible team of volunteers but it was well worth the effort. On 6th April we were blessed with beautiful weather for the opening of the garden. Coinciding with national Community Garden Week, over 160 visitors enjoyed the garden’s spectacular spring bloom, sitting in the central circle amidst an abundance of vegetables, herbs, and flowers. The upcycled and reclaimed features, such as the old shed, greenhouse, children’s play area, pallet furniture, and vibrant hand-painted signage added to the friendly, buzzing atmosphere. The accessible compost loo was a sight to behold and was put to good use!

Attendees of all ages participated in various activities, including following the garden trail, throwing wellies, painting pebbles of hope, swapping seeds and purchasing plants, browsing the jumble sale, learning about sensory herbs, worms and compost, and how to build a compost toilet. As with any successful community event, there was lots of cake!

We had beautiful feedback from visitors who reported feeling ‘a sense of well-being and hope for the future’, ‘joy at seeing people contributing to a better world’ and ‘loving the time and space to connect, all free, inclusive and welcoming’.

We raised over £700 to help plant more seeds of hope for the future, some of which went towards our work with Pensilva Primary School, setting them up with a growing area and worm farm (more below).

We are grateful to all our funders (Cornwall Council’s Social Inclusion and Climate and Nature Funds) and everyone who donated to the crowdfunding campaign. Additional support was provided by Tamar Organics, Stara Community Woodland, Caradon Stone, Tamar Grow Local, The Hive, Liskeard’s Community Treasure Chest, St Cleer Parish Council and Pensilva WI. But the hard graft was put in by our wonderful volunteer family.

👏 What a team!!! 💚

The garden is now open to the public daily from dawn until dusk and will be maintained through volunteer sessions held on Friday mornings. We hope for it to evolve and grow into a space for various gatherings, ranging from celebrations and meetings to workshops focused on soil health, wellbeing, permaculture, medicinal herbs, organic food growing and skills for sustainable living. Although for now everyone needs a well-earned rest!

So, if you haven’t already, please come and visit and enjoy a wander round. To keep food safe and children carefree, we ask that you securely tie your dog in the special area provided behind the compost toilet.

Friday morning volunteer gardening

Every Friday from 9:30 – 12:30, we welcome anyone who would like to come and help out in the garden. While we work, we will also be learning together with a different main topic each month such as soil health, compost teas, worm farming, creating wildlife habitat, medicine from herbs and permaculture. There will be occasional weekend work parties when there are bigger, heavier tasks to do. If you’d like to sign up as a volunteer and join our lovely team then please contact outreach@tregovenek.org.uk.

Planting seeds of hope with Pensilva Primary School

We welcomed Years 5 and 6 from Pensilva Primary School on 20 March, starting with a walk across the moors from the school to Tregovenek, with Ele leading the children through a variety of nature connection games along the way. With great enthusiasm, Hayley talked about the importance of trees and the multitude of benefits to both human and other than human life, and how we can best care for them. Together we planted 60 native broadleaf trees in a new hedgerow around the community garden (kindly donated by the Woodland Trust). The children chose which tree they wanted to plant, and planted it with care, lovingly watering it in and adding mychorrizal fungi to the roots to aid their growth and connection with the soil biome in the hedgebank. They each whispered a wish to their tree.

As an extra activity, a full tray of beetroot seeds were sown by the children ready for the community garden veg beds and some colourful artwork created for the garden.

Our garden steward, Ben, facilitated an interactive session with our guests setting up a wormery for the garden, introducing the worms to their new home and learning all about the importance of worms for food growing and soil health.  Some of the children excitedly came back to our garden opening for a special workshop to make their own wormery to take away and are now proud worm farmers themselves!

In reciprocity for coming out and helping us with our garden and conservation activities, Ben and Hayley went to the primary school to work with years 5 and 6 again and some younger years to prepare a food growing area in the school. They now have two wormeries of their own, making use of some of the school food ‘waste’, turning this organic matter resource into growing medium for their veg plants.

Squash seeds were also planted – to be looked after in the classrooms until they are young plants, and then be planted in the growing beds. The children also made their own paper pots and planted seeds to take home and grow in their gardens.

🥕 We hope this wonderful partnership continues long into the future! 🪴

Tregovenek’s 2025 Pumpkin Challenge!

Over 100 squash seeds have been given out to the community as part of our pumpkin challenge thanks to Tamar Organics – with a diverse set of varieties such as:

  • Sweet Dumpling

  • Turks Turban

  • Pattison Blanc – Custard white

  • Black Futsu

  • Jack O’Lantern

  • Pattison Jaune Vert

  • Amoro

It’s still not too late to join in and grow your own for our pumpkin celebration in October (detailed information will be in the next newsletter). We’re encouraging everyone to have a go. The primary school and pre-school children have set us off to a great start! The free seeds we had available have all been distributed but local garden centres can supply you with some or ask your green-fingered neighbours if they have any to spare. If you are new to gardening and need help or support, please pop along on a Friday morning to chat with our volunteers.

Encouraging community growing is at the heart of Tregovenek’s ethos. We have been particularly enjoying helping young minds feel inspired and empowered to grow their own food and connect with the plants, the wildlife and the land around them.

Pumpkin & squash growing top tips!

  1. Plant your seed sideways so that it doesn’t get too wet in the soil.

  2. Keep it warm! Squash like to be in a warm windowsill and not get cold and wet while germinating and in early stages.

  3. Be careful not to overwater the compost, especially in colder conditions – keep it free draining.

  4. Plant your squash plant outside once it has at least 4 true leaves (the jagged ones!) – You can ‘pot it on’ to a bigger pot first and let it grow bigger before planting out in June to give it the best chance against slug damage. A larger healthy plant will have active resilience against pests. Slugs love squash plants! – so it will likely need protecting.

  5. You can grow squash in a big pot in the garden as in the ground.

  6. Squash are thirsty plants – water well and regularly, especially once flowering and fruiting. Try not to water the leaves, water under the plant. (If you get white mildew on the leaves – it needs more water, not less).

  7. You can mulch around the plant to help keep moisture in the soil. (extra manure or compost, broken down woodchip).

  8. They are also hungry plants! – A high potassium liquid fertiliser or compost tea is good every 2-3 weeks.

  9. They like a sunny spot to ripen the fruits.

  10. They need a lot of room!

Need to chat about the big stuff? Try a Climate Café.

🌿 Join some of the friendly folk from Tregovenek at Liskeard Library for a Climate Café between 6:30 – 8:30pm on Thursday 5th June, 11th September, 13th November.

A chance to come to a supportive space & talk about feelings & responses to the climate and ecological crisis. Everyone welcome, refreshments provided.

Please note, this is a held space (rather than a drop-in session).

Please contact Ele (
ele@tregovenek.org.uk) if you would like to know more.
Book here to attend.  Further information about Climate Cafés here.

Thank you for your support

See you in the garden…!
