Celebrating the change of season &

the humble, but mighty, pumpkin!

Tregovenek’s first-ever growing season has been a great success but not without its challenges. The repeated heat-waves often made working in the garden quite tricky. Despite that we’ve had fantastic harvest of both food and medicines.

Many new visitors have been enjoying the garden, our volunteers are loving the weekly work parties and we are getting excited about our Pumpkin Celebration on 18th October! Plus we are keeping our fingers crossed that we find values-aligned people wishing to purchase parts of the property.

What’s happening in the garden?

👏 A brand new polytunnel 🍾

Just in time for a wet start to Autumn! It’s been an epic mission and all-hands-on-deck to get it all set up but it’s looking great and is already being put to good multi-functional use being a place to bring on seedlings, an undercover growing space and as a venue for workshops and gatherings on rainy days. Massive thanks to all our incredible volunteers (especially to Anthony for leading us on this) and also to the Asda Foundation for the grant to purchase it. It is definitely money very well spent!

🌱 Sharing skills & having fun! 🌽

The Friday morning work parties continue to be enjoyed by many who return week-after- week for a hearty mix of work and fun. Our volunteer team is gradually growing in size too which is lovely to see. The last few months have seen us connecting ever-more strongly with each other and the garden as we learn no-dig techniques, different composting methods, scything, medicinal herb gathering, seed saving and permaculture design. Most importantly we seem to be winning the Battle of the Bindweed!

👋 Welcoming visitors 🤗

Its so exciting to see increasing numbers of visitors to the garden! People just popping in to see what it’s all about but also community groups coming along for a tour. We’ve welcomed Pensilva’s Wednesday Club and Tamar Grow Local as well as the Wilding Tribe who are interested in hosting educational events for children. Sustainable Food Cornwall are also linking Tregovenek with local primary schools to help inspire them in their gardening journeys as they start to provide experiential learning about where our food comes from and how to look after our precious environment.

Thank you to Vicki for the beautiful new signs, lovingly dotted around the garden!

What’s happening next?

There’s so much to learn and we are incredibly grateful to all the amazing people who are giving their time freely to share their knowledge…

🌿 Friday 28th November (during work party) Herbal medicine preparations

Friday morning volunteer gardening

Every Friday from 9:30 – 12:30, we welcome anyone who would like to come and help out in the garden. While we work, we also learn together with a different main topic each month such as soil health, compost teas, worm farming, creating wildlife habitat, medicine from herbs and permaculture. There will be occasional weekend work parties when there are bigger tasks.

If you’d like to sign up as a volunteer and join our team, please contact outreach@tregovenek.org.uk.

What a lovely Annual General Meeting!

We’re pretty proud of ourselves to be able to say that…sunshine, beautiful flowers, laughter, lovely people in a magical garden…& cake! (thank you Vicki 🤗)

Our AGM started with the lighting of the Children’s Fire – reminding us that the decisions we make are for the benefit of the land, more than humans and humans for generations to come. We set an intention to bring the best of ourselves and be good ancestors.

As a Community Benefit Society, we have an annual meeting to make decisions that are put to members, such as electing people to our Board of Directors Circle, to accept our annual report, and agree to continue using the wonderful Triple Bottom Line Accounting Limited to help us with the complexity of accounts!

Purchase Opportunity

We are a small team of volunteers and we want Tregovenek to be financially sustainable for generations to come, so we are looking for people to be neighbours to our community garden.

We have a bungalow, some barns with permission for conversion to houses and a 6 acre field available for a private buyer or a group of buyers who share our values and have similar ideas. This could be the ideal home for a group, or someone wishing to start or re-locate their land-based or wellbeing enterprise, we are open to ideas! 💡

If you are curious to find out more,
please visit our website and read our brochure & FAQs. Closing date for proposals/offers is 30th September 2025. Please share if someone you know might be interested 🙏

Wanted – Finance expert in need of inspiration!

We are seeking a Non-Executive Financial Director to join our CBS Board Circle. No tedious meetings we promise! Our current Directors meet online every 4-6 weeks and by email. We use sociocracy and value professionalism with fun and connection.

If you can bring sound strategic financial overview and scrutiny and have experience of interpreting and presenting accounts and management finances either within a social enterprise, charity or business setting, we would love to hear from you!

Location near Tregovenek is a plus, but not required. For more details, read the role description here. Please email directors@tregovenek.org.uk to arrange a call or visit.

🙏 Be a good ancestor, please apply now.

🌱 Top tips for seed saving 💚

  1. Vegetable seeds are usually fairly easy to identify due to their larger size. However, a magnifying glass or loop can help you identify smaller seeds from herbs and vegetables.

  2. Save the biggest seeds from the most robust plants.

  3. Clean your seeds before storing. Discard smaller seeds and those with insect holes or damage.

  4. When possible allow seeds to dry on the plant before harvesting. For seeds like tomato or cucumber that need to be rinsed, let them dry completely before storing. One moist seed can mold and ruin the entire batch.

  5. Work with one type of seed at a time and label containers before adding seeds. It’s too easy to end up with mystery seeds if you forget to label first.

  6. Most vegetable seeds are reliable when stored off-season in a cool, dark location. Glass and paper are better materials for storing seeds.

  7. Don’t save seeds from hybrid plants. You may get something entirely different if you replant these seeds.

Need to chat about the big stuff? Try a Climate Café.

🌿 Join some of the friendly folk from Tregovenek at Liskeard Library for a Climate Café between 6:30 – 8:30pm on 13th November.

With so much going on in the world and increasingly challenging weather events, sometimes it’s good to just share how you feel with other people – no expectation, no agenda, just sharing and listening. What is happening impacts us in different ways, but often realising that you aren’t alone can help.

Everyone welcome, refreshments provided.

Please note, this is a held space (rather than a drop-in session).

Please contact Ele (
ele@tregovenek.org.uk) if you would like to know more.
Book here to attend.  Further information about Climate Cafés here.

Thank you for your support

See you in the garden…!
